Weight loss is a decrease in body weight resulting from either voluntary (diet, exercise) or involuntary (illness) circumstances. Most instances of weight loss arise due to the loss of body fat, but in cases of extreme or severe weight loss, protein and other substances in the body can also be depleted. Weight loss is normal after pregnancy. Other causes of weight loss include, but are not limited to, cancer, viral infection (such as CMV or HIV), gastroenteritis, parasite infection, depression, bowel diseases, and overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).


Weight loss is a reduction of the total body mass, due to a mean loss of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue and/or lean mass, namely bone mineral deposits, muscle, tendon and other connective tissue. It can occur unintentionally due to an underlying disease or can arise from a conscious effort to improve an actual or perceived overweight or obese state.

However, on average, 50% of weight lost during conventional calorie-restricted diets is derived from muscle tissue. This undesirable loss of lean body mass impedes metabolic rate and contributes to weight regain over time. Additionally, many health problems associated with obesity such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and osteoarthritis can be improved by even modest weight loss (5%-10%).
